"Absolve" 2006, Watercolor and Colored Pencil on Paper 15" x 22"

This piece comes from a photo I took at a small lake deep in the Adirondack Mountains. The lake lies more than a day's walk from the road and there was this very weathered row boat resting mostly submerged at the edge of the lake. I have approached this piece with an intention to make apparent a process; the process by which a particular becomes re-integrated into the whole, from where it may re-manifest as a particular. From this vantage, time becomes fluid and does not certainly correspond to our perception. The disintegrating row boat functions as a metaphor for the transformation of energy through time. All that we do, all that we are, everything that we see and touch; it all has come from the soup of evolution and after it dissolves from this edition, it will become reincarnate again. Acceptance and even more appreciation of this pattern may absolve us of our anxieties in an uncertain and unstable era.
